Ethical Standards

Ethical Argument:

In an ethical argument, your argument is based on a standard of whether something is moral or immoral, right or wrong, good or bad, etc.

You will argue for or against something based on the standard that you choose.
  • Example topics:
    • plagiarism
    • discipline
    • euthanasia
  • Example standards
    • A religious standard—such as Christianity
    • cultural standard—such as American, or
    • political standard—such as conservative, libertarian, or liberal.

Therefore, a thesis for plagiarism based on pre-set standards could look something like these…
· Plagiarism is unethical from a Christian perspective based on X, Y, and Z.· Plagiarism is unethical based on biblical standards based on X, Y, and Z.· Plagiarism is unethical based upon conservative standards X, Y, and Z.
Now, the X, Y, and Z have to be agreed upon ethics within that standard, and so you must research the ethics of that standard so that you can argue persuasively to the audience.
