your ideas on how to structure a proposal argument
on the social issue of the opioid crisis.

Sample thesis statements:
1.       America could experience a decrease in the amount of people who die through opioid abuse if doctors prescribed alternative methods, instead of opioids, to curb pain, if free rehabilitation centers existed for lower-income Americans, and if the church educated its members on how to minister to those suffering from addiction
2.       An effective way to fight the opioid crisis is to require opioid-producing drug companies to sponsor drug education for youth, rehabilitation facilities in local hospitals, and community outreach programs to help those struggling with the addition at any stage.
3.    With an ever-growing opioid crisis in the US, Christians are in a great position to help by showing God’s love through community outreach to drug users, volunteering to work on drug education in the schools and through PSAs, as well as provide more drug support groups within church facilities.
4.    In order to combat the opioid crisis in the United States, drug companies who manufacture prescription opioid substances must provide funding so that greater emphasis will be placed on community support, dependence prevention, and addiction treatment
5.    Many people who are concerned about the opioid crisis in America want stricter laws for drug use and less opioid prescriptions, in reality, government-sponsored community programs, spiritual care from churches, and improved mental health treatment for addicts is the only way to reduce opioid deaths in America.

Sample Body Paragraph

Community agencies and local churches need to work together to create education and understanding in the community about the opioid crisis and helping those with opioid addictions on a personal- and emotional-level.  Drug addicts must be seen as viable members of the American society by altering the social labels put upon them and changing such labels from worthless to redeemable.  Each person suffering from opioid drug abuse is someone's brother, sister, son, daughter, or parent.  Therefore, opioid drug addicts must be encouraged to find worth in their lives without the drug use/abuse. Sonia Tolbert indicates that "increased punishment for opioid use is not the way to get Americans out of this dangerous cycle of overdose" but she suggests "implementing better drug education at all levels through the community" (45).  She further suggests that the stigma of drug addicts being "lost souls and repugnant in society" is destructive to our culture and society.  It is essential that these addicts are not left to their addictions and quietly closed in the metaphorical 'closet'.  Community-based organizations:
are often considered to include churches, unions, schools, health care agencies, social-service groups, fraternities, and clubs. Community organizations are predominantly conceptualized as nonprofit, but broader conceptions of community sometimes include all organizations, including for-profit enterprises. (Community-Based Organizations, Agencies, and Groups, 2020)
The community will learn strategies and develop programs for opioid abuse through such community-based organizations, and these organizations must be supported through drug company taxation and specialized grants from the federal government. To alleviate the opioid crisis, it is important for a change in view to start immediately.  Viewing drug addicts as troubled souls in need of relief is essential to reducing the number of deaths by opioid abuse.

SAMPLE Thesis Statements for a Proposal Argument

A student has asked for some sample Thesis statements to understand if he is on the right track or not as he continues to work on his essay this week.

Below are some modified sample thesis statements of ideas your peers have submitted to me.  Please remember that you are PROPOSING SOLUTIONS to alleviate the opioid crisis (which means opioid deaths).  You want to make sure that you are asserting a CHANGE, and when you can, you want to assert HOW this change will take place or be financed.  The second and fourth sample theses below indicate that drug companies that make opioids should be taxed so that there are programs for those who later become addicted to their drugs.  However, keep in mind that not all opioid abusers are overdosing on prescription drugs.  Some deaths in this opioid crisis come from illegal opioid use. Nonetheless, taxing the drug companies would be a good place to start to finance these changes.

Sample thesis statements:
1.       America could experience a decrease in the amount of people who die through opioid abuse if doctors prescribed alternative methods, instead of opioids, to curb pain, if free rehabilitation centers existed for lower-income Americans, and if the church educated its members on how to minister to those suffering from addiction.

4.       In order to combat the opioid crisis in the United States, drug companies who manufacture prescription opioid substances must provide funding so that greater emphasis will be placed on community support, dependence prevention, and addiction treatment.

Hopefully, the information from the online Proposal Argument packet will let you know if the Thesis YOU are working on is viable or not.
